Requirements
- Significant professional experience building and operating production Ruby on Rails applications.
- Demonstrated experience designing or implementing authorization systems, including role-based access control or fine-grained permissions.
- Strong security mindset for assessing blast radius and treating authorization defects as security issues.
- Experience working safely within large, long-lived codebases including incremental refactoring and migrations.
- Working knowledge of GraphQL and API authorization patterns.
- Strong understanding of performance considerations at scale for high-volume requests.
- Excellent written communication skills for documentation and asynchronous collaboration.
- Ability to learn new technologies and balance security, reliability, performance, and maintainability.
- Familiarity with Rust, gRPC, Protocol Buffers, Cedar, or Zanzibar-style systems is a plus.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and operate authorization capabilities within a large Ruby on Rails application.
- Own technical workstreams end to end, from problem definition and architecture through feature-flagged deployment and migration.
- Develop and expand fine-grained permissions for tokens and roles.
- Strengthen authorization enforcement across GraphQL and REST APIs.
- Refactor established policy code for consistent evaluation by existing apps and new policy engines.
- Contribute to the migration toward a shared authorization platform using technologies such as Rust and gRPC.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to establish interface contracts and support shared authorization capabilities.
- Identify and address technical debt while maintaining backward compatibility.
- Document architectural decisions through design documents and code reviews.
