Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent practical experience.
- 8+ years of software engineering experience.
- Proven track record of setting architecture and technical direction for large, complex distributed systems.
- Deep backend engineering experience with production proficiency in Python, Kotlin, or Java.
- Experience designing or operating Tier 0/Tier 1 services with high demand for latency and throughput.
- Strong understanding of APIs, service-oriented architectures, containerization, and AWS cloud infrastructure.
- Demonstrated ability to influence cross-organization technical decisions without direct authority.
- Experience mentoring senior engineers and expanding the scope of other technical leaders.
- Strong product and business judgment balancing technical debt, risk, and delivery.
- Ability to work effectively in a predominantly Python environment.
Responsibilities
- Define the cross-company technical vision and roadmap for Upstart's pricing platform.
- Lead the architectural evolution from tightly coupled, sequential workflows toward modular, reusable platform capabilities.
- Design and improve Tier 0/Tier 1 services with focus on latency, throughput, availability, and financial correctness.
- Partner with machine-learning scientists to create reliable boundaries between models and production pricing systems.
- Clarify service, API, configuration, and ownership boundaries across multiple product teams.
- Reduce operational burden through improved testing, observability, and incident learning.
- Lead company-wide technical discussions and build alignment across Engineering, ML, Product, Data, Security, and Compliance.
- Mentor senior technical leaders and maintain code quality through design reviews and critical implementation.
