Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in design, computer science, or a related discipline.
- At least 7 years of professional design experience for an information-driven digital publication.
- Strong visual and graphic design skills with a portfolio demonstrating data visualization and information graphics.
- Ability to code interactive designs using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
- Proficiency in d3 and JavaScript libraries, SVG animation, and interactivity design.
- Experience with data acquisition, data cleaning, and data analysis using Python or R.
- Knowledge of design fundamentals including color theory, typography, composition, and layout.
- Understanding of basic data analysis and ability to distill complex information into essential points.
- Collaborative and communicative skills for working in cross-functional teams.
- Adaptability to feedback and evolving project needs.
Responsibilities
- Create visual designs such as charts, graphs, and interactives, for digital products, ensuring alignment with the overall UX strategy and user needs.
- Partner with the content team to understand upcoming stories and develop design approaches to enhance coverage.
- Analyze, synthesize and interpret data to be translated into visual designs that facilitate the reader's understanding and experience.
- Deliver compelling visual storytelling—which helps users better understand key story points, and creates a richer user experience.
- Design data visualizations and information graphics that include high-fidelity visual designs, typography, color schemes, iconography, and layout.
- Prototype and develop interactives in HTML, CSS and JS.
- Implement interactive graphics in the content management system.
- Optimize presentation across platforms by ensuring that visual and interactive elements provide a consistent, engaging experience.
