Requirements

  • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience with a track record of delivering production software.
  • Strong cloud-native engineering fundamentals; Azure experience preferred (AWS or GCP considered).
  • Demonstrated experience with Spec-Driven Development, Test-Driven Development, clean architecture, and domain-driven design.
  • Hands-on experience with AI-assisted software development tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, or GitHub Copilot.
  • Ability to read, understand, reverse-engineer, and improve unfamiliar or legacy codebases.
  • Experience creating technical documentation and diagrams using Markdown, Mermaid.js, and Git-based workflows.
  • Understanding of automated testing, modular architecture, software quality, and architectural guardrails.
  • Strong communication skills for explaining technical reasoning to engineers and stakeholders.
  • Experience maintaining or reverse-engineering Perl or other long-lived legacy languages (preferred).
  • Background in LIMS, scientific software, or regulated/compliance-driven environments (preferred).
  • Experience with Oracle, database migration, PostgreSQL, or Snowflake (preferred).
  • Familiarity with containerization (Podman, Docker) and hybrid deployment patterns (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Establish a “blueprints before bricks” approach using Markdown specifications and Mermaid.js.
  • Create comprehensive automated test coverage and maintain architectural guardrails.
  • Utilize AI-assisted tools like Cursor, Claude Code, or GitHub Copilot for codebase archaeology and prototyping.
  • Analyze and reverse-engineer legacy code to produce module-level documentation and identify technical debt.
  • Document critical data flows, including sample lifecycles and enterprise integrations.
  • Define system placement within Azure cloud infrastructure for high availability and hybrid deployment.
  • Partner with staff-level engineering and laboratory stakeholders to align modernization efforts.
  • Develop reference implementations for high-risk architectural components.
  • Contribute to prompt libraries and coding standards for team-wide adoption.
