- Minimum of 8 years of life insurance underwriting experience.
- Demonstrated expertise underwriting large, complex cases, including impaired risks.
- Experience working with independent agents, brokerage distribution channels, and BGAs.
- Proven ability to make underwriting decisions involving high face amounts and complex risk profiles.
- Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills with the ability to evaluate detailed medical and financial information.
- Excellent communication and relationship management skills.
- Customer-focused mindset with a commitment to service excellence.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining productivity and decision quality.
- Demonstrated history of professional growth, strong performance, and sound underwriting judgment.
- Industry designations such as FALU, FLMI, CLU, or equivalent underwriting coursework are preferred.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development within the life insurance industry.
Responsibilities
- Independently evaluate and underwrite complex individual life insurance cases, including impaired risk profiles and high-face-amount applications.
- Assess medical, financial, and non-medical information to make accurate, timely, and well-supported underwriting decisions.
- Handle cases typically exceeding $5M in face amount, with underwriting authority up to $10M.
- Provide second-signature support, guidance, and mentorship to less experienced underwriting professionals.
- Collaborate with sales, distribution, and business teams to support growth objectives and maintain strong partner relationships.
- Build and maintain effective relationships with independent agents, brokerage general agencies (BGAs), and distribution partners.
- Manage a significant caseload while maintaining high standards for quality, service, and turnaround times.
- Clearly communicate underwriting decisions, rationale, and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders.
- Contribute to team development through coaching, knowledge sharing, training, and continuous improvement initiatives.
