Requirements
- Three to five years of related experience (lived or professional) in substance use, recovery, problem gambling, or harm reduction services, or a bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, human services, or related field.
- Experience in information and referral services, customer service, counseling, or human services.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a customer-focused approach.
- Proficiency with computer systems and ability to use online databases.
- High ethical standards and ability to maintain professional boundaries.
- Ability to adapt to changes in work environment and demonstrate dependability.
- Two years of sobriety for individuals in recovery.
- Openness to working with Helpline users who may be ambivalent, impaired, or have psychological disorders.
- Willingness to respect cultural differences and diversity of thought.
- Certified Resource Specialist (through Inform USA) preferred or willingness to obtain within one year.
Responsibilities
- Assess the needs of Helpline users by telephone, online chat, and SMS texting.
- Provide appropriate information and referrals to substance use, gambling disorder, mental health, and related services.
- Engage and motivate Helpline users to follow through on referrals using active listening and motivational interviewing techniques.
- Gather and record data from Helpline users in the Helpline database.
- Verify Helpline users’ insurance status as applicable.
- Assist in updating the Helpline database of state licensed and approved services.
- Escalate consumer interactions to Clinicians and/or supervisors when applicable.
