Requirements:
  • 5+ years of progressive inpatient coding experience in an acute care hospital setting.
  • CCS Certification (Certified Coding Specialist) is required.
  • Proficiency in ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding systems.
  • Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology to support accurate code assignment.
  • Extensive experience coding for Orthopedics, Neurology, Cardiology, General Surgery, Trauma Level II, and high-acuity cases.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for interacting with physicians, clinical staff, and documentation specialists.
Responsibilities:
  • Analyze and review multi-day, multi-specialty inpatient documentation to assign accurate ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes for diagnoses and procedures.
  • Ensure accurate MS-DRG assignment and compliance with coding guidelines, payer requirements, and organizational policies.
  • Collaborate with medical staff and Clinical Documentation Specialists (CDI) to validate clinical documentation, particularly for complex diagnoses such as malnutrition and sepsis.
  • Develop and issue physician queries when necessary to clarify documentation for coding accuracy.
  • Monitor bill hold reports and resolve coding-related holds to support timely and clean claim submission.
  • Serve as a liaison to the Quality Department for PSI/HAC reviews, ensuring the accuracy of coded data for quality reporting.
  • Provide mentorship and training support to Coder I, Coder II, and Coder III team members, as well as clinical coding students.
  • Stay up to date with coding regulations, coding clinics, payer guidelines, and industry changes.
