Requirements
- Must have received an education from at least one of Harvard University, Stanford University, Yale University, Columbia University, or Princeton University; the posting states this requirement has no exceptions.
- Have an excellent command of written English.
- Demonstrate the ability to improve sentence structure, grammar, clarity, tone, organization, and narrative flow.
- Have demonstrated experience editing essays, personal statements, academic writing, or other substantive written materials.
- Be able to assess essay structure, arguments, topic selection, and overall presentation and recommend improvements.
- Bring meticulous attention to language, consistency, formatting, and editorial quality.
- Understand the distinction between editing and ghostwriting and preserve applicants’ authentic authorship.
- Be able to organize assignments, prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and work without close supervision.
- Provide clear, constructive, and actionable feedback tailored to applicants.
- Be willing to accept project-by-project assignments and manage a variable workload.
- Have access to a computer and be able to receive assignments and complete editing work remotely.
Responsibilities
- Edit admissions essays and personal statements to improve clarity, coherence, structure, and effectiveness while preserving each applicant’s voice.
- Help applicants identify essay topics and develop narratives about their motivations, experiences, and aspirations.
- Restructure disorganized or lengthy passages, refine sentences, strengthen transitions, and improve logical flow.
- Provide constructive editorial feedback and recommendations tailored to each applicant.
- Proofread final drafts for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and consistency.
- Edit essays for undergraduate, business school, law school, medical school, and graduate applications.
- Manage email-based freelance assignments, meet deadlines, and maintain consistent quality.
- Improve applicants’ own writing without writing essays on their behalf.
