Required Skills
AWSPostgreSQLPythonBashRubyGoCI/CDLinuxTerraform

Requirements

  • Have 7+ years in database engineering, database reliability, infrastructure, or SRE roles, including hands-on ownership of production PostgreSQL.
  • Bring deep PostgreSQL expertise, including internals and MVCC, EXPLAIN (ANALYZE, BUFFERS), indexing, vacuum behavior, locking, connection pooling, and configuration tuning.
  • Have strong experience with Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL and AWS-managed database services.
  • Have a proven track record of zero-downtime upgrades and complex schema migrations on large, busy tables.
  • Have hands-on experience with physical and logical replication, partitioning, read scaling, and backup and disaster-recovery strategy.
  • Have solid Infrastructure-as-Code experience, primarily Terraform, on AWS.
  • Have strong Linux fundamentals and fluency in at least one scripting language: Bash, Python, Ruby, or Go.
  • Have experience with monitoring and observability tooling and a solid grasp of IAM, secrets management, and network segmentation.
  • Have experience with production change, incident, and problem management, plus Git and modern CI/CD workflows applied to database changes.
  • Communicate database trade-offs to backend engineers and non-specialists in a remote-first organization.
  • Be willing and able to participate in an on-call rotation.
  • Have a bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Responsibilities

  • Own reliability, performance, and scalability of the PostgreSQL platform, primarily Amazon Aurora, including query and index strategy, execution plans, configuration tuning, and capacity planning.
  • Lead zero-downtime version upgrades and schema migrations, and diagnose and prevent plan regressions across Aurora major versions.
  • Manage vacuum strategy, bloat, long-running transactions, connection pooling, lock contention, and logical replication health.
  • Review backend-team schema changes and DDL for lock behavior, migration safety, and performance impact; build guardrails and tooling for safe changes.
  • Own backup, restore, and disaster recovery, including rehearsed restore drills and required access, encryption, and auditing controls.
  • Model database capacity and cost and improve cost efficiency without compromising reliability.
  • Deliver infrastructure and automation using Terraform and AWS, and contribute to CI/CD workflows for database changes.
  • Build and maintain database and platform monitoring, alerting, and observability.
  • Use cloud security and vulnerability-management tooling to triage findings and maintain compliance.
  • Participate in on-call, incident response, and postmortems; drive root-cause analysis and remediation.
