Requirements
- Have at least 12-15+ years of compliance experience.
- Bring substantial experience and/or knowledge of the nonprofit sector, employment law, and professional ethics.
- Demonstrate strong project management and familiarity with CRM systems.
- Have deep knowledge of federal and state employment and nonprofit law, IRS regulations governing tax-exempt organizations, and nonprofit governance best practices.
- Demonstrate experience developing and maintaining a compliance function, including policy development, training, and monitoring systems.
- Apply strong analytical and legal reasoning skills to translate regulatory requirements into actionable guidance.
- Have experience presenting to senior leadership and communicating with varied internal and external audiences.
- Demonstrate a collaborative working style and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Adapt workflows to changing priorities and move work forward independently while seeking stakeholder guidance as needed.
- Exercise high integrity, sound judgment, and discretion when handling sensitive matters.
- A J.D. or equivalent legal training is preferred; active bar membership is a plus but not required.
- Experience in a legal, advocacy, or policy-focused nonprofit organization is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Oversee compliance with requirements governing 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations.
- Provide assistance and oversight on employment and ethics policies and adherence to the Code of Conduct.
- Oversee state charitable solicitation registrations and timely renewal filings.
- Partner with the People and Culture team on local, state, and federal employment-law compliance.
- Maintain grant compliance tracking systems and participate in compliance reviews.
- Support due diligence for contractors and vendors.
- Work with Finance on internal financial controls, audits, and programmatic reviews.
- Assist the General Counsel with internal reviews and audits when necessary.
- Maintain a compliance calendar and drive updates to compliance policies.
- Develop staff training materials and manage training requirements and updates.
