Requirements
- Have 5+ years of experience operating and optimizing production databases as a primary job responsibility.
- Bring hands-on experience managing distributed databases, including their performance and high-availability behavior.
- Have hands-on experience managing relational databases for business-critical production systems.
- Demonstrate improvements to queries, indexing, schema, or database configuration.
- Have strong SQL skills and fluency with execution plans and transaction management.
- Understand distributed SQL trade-offs, including replication, consistency, consensus, and distributed transactions.
- Be able to assess database change risks and explain technical trade-offs to engineers.
- Independently investigate unfamiliar systems, identify priorities, and carry improvements through to completion.
- Work collaboratively with teams that depend on your expertise.
Responsibilities
- Investigate database performance bottlenecks and reliability risks using instrumentation, code review, and staging tests.
- Improve slow queries, indexes, and database settings based on application needs.
- Diagnose transaction contention, retries, hot ranges, and inefficient access patterns with application engineers.
- Establish performance baselines and improve database observability.
- Advise engineering teams on schema migrations, access patterns, configuration changes, and database design.
- Contribute database expertise to incident response and root-cause analysis, and implement lasting fixes.
- Develop migration procedures, documentation, and guidance for application teams.
- Plan version upgrades, validate backup and recovery, and maintain appropriate cluster settings and sizing.
- Work with Cockroach Labs on the managed database environment and right-size the database footprint.
- Partner with infrastructure, platform, and application engineers, and mentor engineers on database troubleshooting and distributed-database concepts.
