Requirements
- Have 8+ years of software development experience building and operating scalable, reliable systems in production.
- Bring strong experience designing and operating complex ETL pipelines, data processing platforms, or other high-throughput data-intensive systems.
- Understand distributed systems concepts, including concurrency, partitioning, consistency, idempotency, retries, failure recovery, and horizontal scaling.
- Have performance engineering experience, including profiling complex systems, identifying bottlenecks, and improving throughput and latency.
- Have experience with large datasets and efficient transformation, persistence, indexing, and retrieval.
- Demonstrate a deep understanding of computer science fundamentals, including algorithms, data structures, networking, and databases.
- Have experience designing and scaling distributed systems focused on performance, observability, reliability, and fault tolerance.
- Demonstrate strong architectural judgment and the ability to make technical decisions affecting multiple teams and systems.
- Be able to influence and mentor senior engineers, guide teams through ambiguity, and improve engineering practices.
- Bring strong ownership and the ability to drive initiatives forward.
- Have excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Be comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-autonomy, product-driven environment.
- Experience with data engineering, data ingestion platforms, product catalogues, e-commerce data, or search systems is preferred.
- Familiarity with Python, Django, Kubernetes, PostgreSQL, OpenSearch, or AWS is preferred; analogous expertise and willingness to learn are also welcome.
Responsibilities
- Drive the architecture and evolution of ETL and data processing systems that ingest customer product catalogs.
- Design systems to process large, variable datasets with complex schemas, transformations, validation rules, and dependencies.
- Identify and eliminate performance bottlenecks across data ingestion, transformation, persistence, indexing, and retrieval.
- Design horizontally scalable distributed processing systems with correctness, idempotency, fault tolerance, retries, and recovery.
- Evolve the architecture of the product catalog platform as its size and complexity grow.
- Partner with product and engineering leadership to define technical direction and plan foundational investments for scale and performance.
- Mentor senior engineers, conduct architecture reviews, and support high-quality development across teams.
- Set technical standards for backend system scalability, resiliency, observability, and maintainability.
- Lead cross-functional initiatives involving multiple teams and stakeholders.
- Influence hiring, onboarding, and growth strategies for the engineering organization.
