Requirements
- Be a currently matriculated legal student based in the U.S. for the entire internship.
- Be a second- or third-year law school student pursuing a J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Have completed at least one year of law school before the internship commences.
- Demonstrate interest in the rights of incarcerated people and commitment to civil rights.
- Have strong legal research, writing, and communication skills.
- Demonstrate ability to perform complex legal analytical work.
- Have strong organizational skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Have strong computer skills, particularly web-based research.
- Be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word and Excel.
- Commit to advancing the ACLU’s mission and to collaborative, respectful work.
Responsibilities
- Research and draft legal memoranda and briefing regarding the rights of incarcerated people.
- Gather, analyze, and synthesize current information about prison, jail, and detention center conditions.
- Research and draft prospects for new litigation or campaign advocacy.
- Assist with drafting, producing, and distributing advocacy and public education materials.
- Provide litigation and advocacy support to supervising attorneys.
