Requirements
- Be a currently matriculated law student.
- Have completed the 1L year before the internship commences.
- Demonstrate commitment to the ACLU’s mission, including civil liberties, civil rights, social justice, and international human rights.
- Show a strong interest in protecting and expanding civil and human rights.
- Have strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Have excellent research, writing, and communication skills.
- Have strong computer skills, particularly in web-based research.
- Be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word and Excel.
- Show initiative in seeing projects through to completion.
- Commit to 10, 15, or 20 hours per week for 12 consecutive weeks.
- Tie the internship to formal education through integrated coursework or academic credit; the internship is for course credit only.
- Knowledge of the human rights framework and international human rights system is a plus.
- Knowledge or experience with immigration and criminal legal system issues, especially extreme punishment, sentencing, and juvenile justice, is a plus.
Responsibilities
- Conduct legal and policy research.
- Draft memoranda, affidavits, and briefs.
- Research factual and legal claims and prospects for new litigation.
- Research and draft materials for public education and human rights documentation.
- Research and draft materials for advocacy before regional and international bodies.
