- Have spent several years as a senior backend engineer before moving into management.
- Be comfortable discussing system design, infrastructure, and technical trade-offs with experienced engineers.
- Coach engineers to make decisions and handle stakeholder conversations themselves.
- Communicate clearly and stay calm under pressure, including during outages.
- Build strong relationships with leads and stakeholders, and remain open to the best solution while holding your ground when needed.
- Have a strong product mindset and connect team work to user and business needs.
- Follow up on topics before they stall.
Responsibilities
- Take ownership of team rituals, including stand-ups, refinements, sprint planning, retrospectives, and a bi-weekly written sync.
- Build working relationships with squad leads and product managers so backend work is included in squad plans from the start of each quarter.
- Build the quarterly roadmap with engineers and keep progress visible to dependent teams as part of the OKR process.
- Grow the team through regular 1:1s, development goals, and timely feedback, and address accountability issues early.
- Hire for the team with the Talent Acquisition team as it grows.
- Ensure production issues and outages reach the right person and are resolved.
