Requirements
- Experience writing for digital media, student publications, local news organizations or similar outlets.
- Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills.
- Understanding of AP Style.
- Comfortable using AI and emerging technology as part of the editorial workflow.
- Strong news judgment and the ability to recognize compelling local stories.
- Creative thinker with the ability to generate story ideas independently.
- Comfortable working independently and managing deadlines.
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
- Familiarity with social media platforms as reporting and newsgathering tools.
- Technologically savvy with the ability to quickly learn new publishing tools and workflows.
Responsibilities
- Produce 16-20 local news stories per day across multiple Patch sites.
- Use AI tools to efficiently draft and develop accurate, engaging local news content.
- Identify newsworthy stories from government agencies, municipalities, businesses, schools, nonprofits, public meetings and community organizations.
- Monitor social media, local websites, newsletters and public records to discover original story ideas and community trends.
- Create compelling, SEO-friendly headlines.
- Verify facts and ensure all content meets Patch's editorial standards.
- Edit and proofread stories for AP Style, clarity, grammar and accuracy.
