Requirements
- Track record of leading complex, multi-quarter initiatives.
- Substantial hands-on experience building and operating distributed data systems.
- Proficiency in Go or deep experience in other systems languages like Rust, C, or C++.
- Strong software craftsmanship with a focus on maintainability and performance.
- Operational mindset with experience owning production services and managing SLOs.
- Strong written communication skills suitable for a remote, asynchronous environment.
- Experience with tracing, OpenTelemetry, or large-scale observability systems preferred.
- Experience designing query languages or APIs for programmatic consumption.
- Experience with columnar storage formats like Parquet.
- Experience operating multi-tenant SaaS infrastructure at scale on Kubernetes.
Responsibilities
- Lead multi-quarter technical initiatives from problem framing through rollout.
- Own the architecture of core Tempo components including ingestion, storage, query, and metrics generation.
- Design structured, deterministic APIs for humans, AI assistants, and external integrators.
- Drive operational excellence and outcome ownership against concrete SLOs.
- Partner with Product and sibling teams to ship unblocking features and improvements.
- Mentor engineers through design feedback, code reviews, and pairing.
- Participate in on-call rotations and lead incident response and post-incident learning.
- Contribute to and steer the Tempo open-source project.
