Requirements
- 10+ years of legal experience, including significant in-house experience.
- Active state bar membership in good standing, preferably in California or New York.
- Expertise in nonprofit and tax-exempt law, data privacy, contract negotiation, international corporate governance, and employment law.
- Excellent people management skills with experience building and coaching professional teams.
- Strong ability to translate complex legal issues into clear, actionable guidance for non-legal leadership.
- Proven success leading complex legal or compliance projects with cross-functional stakeholders.
- Sound judgment in calibrating legal guidance to practical stakes.
- Ability to work remotely within the United States.
Responsibilities
- Build and lead GiveWell’s legal function and serve as the organization’s primary legal decision-maker.
- Maintain and improve the organization's compliance posture across multiple jurisdictions, including employment law, data privacy, and security.
- Provide strategic leadership and management for the Grants Admin function, including guidance on complex grant structures.
- Own contracting across all functional areas including grants, contributions, and employment.
- Modernize legal administration work by prioritizing technology and automation tools to increase capacity.
- Partner with Research, Outreach, Finance, People, and Tech leadership to integrate legal considerations into major organizational decisions.
