Requirements
- Degree or substantial hands-on background in a materials or engineering discipline (materials science, chemistry, plastics/polymer, textile, packaging, industrial, or mechanical engineering).
- Ability to reason about product material composition, including resins, laminates, coatings, composites, and multi-layer assemblies.
- Capacity to estimate composition and weight when primary data is incomplete.
- Exceptional attention to detail and ability to perform high-stakes analysis with strict accuracy requirements.
- Strong interest in policy and research with the ability to ground decisions in regulatory text.
- Clear technical communication skills to explain complex findings to cross-functional teams.
- Demonstrated ability to defend determinations through diligent research.
- Comfort working in an environment where technical analysis directly impacts financial reporting.
Responsibilities
- Analyze material composition and BOM structures by breaking down components into materials, layers, formulations, and coatings.
- Determine resin, substrate, or compound types, percentages, and weights, creating proxies when supplier data is incomplete.
- Translate material composition into correct reporting classifications by applying specific statutory and program definitions.
- Model material-switch, source-reduction, and fee-scenario analyses to identify alternative materials.
- Author and maintain classification routing rules that map material attributes to reporting categories.
- Execute rigorous quality control, ensuring schema conformance and providing final technical sign-off on filings.
- Provide technical expertise for escalated composition, classification, and exemption queries.
- Define material science and threshold rules for the automated recommendation engine.
- Collaborate with product and engineering teams to translate material properties into structured platform logic.
