Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Proven experience in insurance verification, medical billing, or relevant healthcare practice.
- Knowledge of basic health insurance terminology.
- Understanding of differences between payer types (Commercial vs. Medicaid) and plan types (HMO vs. PPO).
- Excellent computer skills.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal skills including empathy and patience.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to analyze situations and communicate calmly with patients and payers.
- Experience with Athena EHR system preferred.
Responsibilities
- Review insurance eligibility and coverage issues for patient appointments three days in advance using the EHR.
- Contact payers and families to resolve insurance issues prior to visits.
- Serve as the primary escalation contact for scheduling and practice-based reception teams regarding eligibility.
- Follow up post-visit on PCP assignment and Coordination of Benefits (COB) issues.
- Document accurate insurance information in the EHR system.
- Work with front desk staff to coordinate co-pay and self-pay fee collections.
- Identify and communicate trends in eligibility or coverage issues to leadership.
- Maintain HIPAA compliance and confidentiality at all times.
