Requirements
- Hold a bachelor’s or foreign equivalent degree in Computer Science, Math, Machine Learning, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field, plus 5 years of relevant experience; alternatively, hold a master’s or foreign equivalent degree in a listed or related field plus 4 years of relevant experience.
- Have at least 4 years of experience with Python.
- Have at least 4 years of experience in Golang engineering.
- Have at least 4 years of machine-learning backend engineering experience, including machine-learning platform design, architecture concepts, and best practices.
- Have experience with ETL/ELT pipelines and fluency in Python, Golang, and JavaScript.
- Have experience with TensorFlow, HuggingFace Transformers, and scikit-learn.
- Have experience deploying machine-learning models end to end, including containers/Docker, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions, and AWS systems.
- Have experience with DataDog, Grafana, Looker, Mode, Snowflake, and ScyllaDB.
- Have at least 3 years of expertise in recommendation systems, including the Medium Recommendations System, Two-Tower Architecture, retrieval systems, and Medium-specific business logic.
- Have at least 2 years of experience with machine-learning algorithms, including neural embeddings, approximate nearest neighbor algorithms, ranking models, contrastive learning, negative sampling, multi-objective optimization, and statistical methods for online experimentation and causal measurement.
- Have specialization in machine learning, backend software engineering, DevOps/infrastructure, or high-performance engineering, including maintaining high-performance, high-uptime systems and collaborating with applied scientists or mathematicians.
Responsibilities
- Own the engineering success and impact of the Medium Recommendations application.
- Design and architect the feature store and recommendation backend service.
- Create, maintain, and update backend logic for core recommender-system features.
- Proactively address privacy, security, and cost issues in the recommendations stack and optimize performance and cost.
- Act as the company’s technical expert for ML Ops.
- Lead major machine-learning technical and product feature development projects.
- Propose, plan, and execute large-scale improvements to the technology stack and product.
- Break complex projects into systems that other engineers can plan and build.
- Set technical direction, coordinate cross-team technical plans, and share knowledge across teams.
- Mentor engineers, support their growth, and participate in the once-monthly, weeklong on-call rotation.
