Requirements

  • Have a bachelor’s degree and 8 years of professional experience, a master’s degree and 6 years, an associate’s degree and 10 years, or a high school diploma/equivalent and 12 years.
  • Bring extensive GIS experience focused on species range mapping or federal environmental applications.
  • Have direct experience with the FWS Range Mapping SOP or equivalent federal range mapping standards.
  • Be proficient in ArcGIS, QGIS, or equivalent GIS platforms.
  • Be proficient in Python for GIS automation and spatial data processing, including ArcPy or equivalent scripting libraries.
  • Be proficient in SQL for querying and validating spatial data within cloud data platforms.
  • Have experience with coordinate reference system transformations and spatial data normalization.
  • Have experience conducting spatial-intersect validation and Critical Habitat analysis.
  • Have strong QA documentation skills for geospatial deliverables.
  • U.S. citizenship is required, and candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
  • Preferred: Experience with NOAA Fisheries marine or anadromous species range data.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with Databricks or cloud data platforms for spatial data retrieval.
  • Preferred: Experience coordinating formal government deliverable approvals.
  • Preferred: GISP certification or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Lead production of complete range maps for marine and anadromous taxa in compliance with the FWS Range Mapping SOP.
  • Obtain and review the FWS Range Mapping SOP at or before project kickoff.
  • Aggregate and normalize range data from cloud data platform outputs, applying CRS transformations and spatial format standardization.
  • Validate spatial intersects against authoritative geographic layers, addressing dynamic habitat boundaries and overlapping Critical Habitat designations.
  • Facilitate iterative map reviews with FWS Ecological Services and NOAA Fisheries SMEs, incorporating feedback into revised maps.
  • Produce QA documentation for each range map and confirm maps meet SOP acceptance criteria before submission for government sign-off.
  • Coordinate FWS Ecological Services sign-off on the Range Map Set deliverable.
  • Support updated range maps after production as part of operational handoff documentation.
