Requirements
- Have at least an associate degree; a bachelor’s degree is preferred.
- Have at least 3 years of experience in a related healthcare field or a practicum in an NCRA-accredited program.
- Hold Certified Oncology Data Specialist certification; candidates eligible to obtain the ODS credential within 2 years of employment under ODS supervision may be considered.
- Maintain continuing education for the ODS credential as required by NYS DOH and CoC regulations.
- Know malignant disease processes, applicable work-up, treatment, and outcomes.
- Maintain current knowledge of treatment trends and diagnostics and understand the registry’s role within a cancer program.
- Be proficient in medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
- Have experience interacting with physicians and other healthcare professionals.
- Maintain patient confidentiality.
- Have knowledge of computer operations, MS Office Suite, and current registry vendor software such as ERS/CRStar.
- Be able to recognize basic cell types for classification purposes.
Responsibilities
- Analyze electronic and paper medical records and extract clinical, pathological, therapeutic, and epidemiologic data according to oncology data collection practices and standards.
- Assign codes using current manuals and coding and staging schemas, and document the basis for coding choices.
- Enter registry information accurately and meet regulatory timeliness guidelines.
- Follow cases through the initiation of first-course treatment and document planned and administered therapies, including reasons for no treatment when applicable.
- Determine whether cases qualify for accessioning and prepare and abstract data for patients receiving diagnosis or treatment care.
- Maintain the cancer registry in accordance with ACoS CoC standards, NYSCR regulations, and GFH guidelines.
- Provide support for oncology case conferences in the absence of the Oncology Data Management Coordinator.
- Complete continuing education and participate in professional organizations, meetings, and educational programs to maintain and advance registry data management expertise.
