Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or related field (advanced degree preferred).
  • At least 5 years of experience building and operating production software or data systems.
  • At least 2 years of experience shipping LLM-powered applications (agents, retrieval, or evaluation).
  • End-to-end experience building retrieval systems, including indexing, query construction, and quality measurement.
  • Experience evaluating systems using golden sets, offline regression suites, and metrics like Recall@K and MRR.
  • Experience with structured output, tool/function calling, and schema validation.
  • Strong proficiency in Python (FastAPI, Pydantic, pytest).
  • Deep experience with PostgreSQL (vector search, full-text search, query tuning).
  • Experience with containerization and Kubernetes for service deployment.
  • Comfort working in Next.js, React, and TypeScript.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust Security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Model biomedical knowledge for rare disease research by ingesting disease and phenotype ontologies.
  • Build retrieval-augmented services that ground natural language in clinical concepts.
  • Tune keyword and vector search over large biomedical corpora, optimizing for recall and latency.
  • Develop ranking and relevance layers including domain-aware weighting.
  • Deliver user-facing interfaces using Next.js, React, and TypeScript.
  • Deploy services continuously onto NIH on-premises and HPC Kubernetes environments.
  • Build and maintain automated evaluation and regression suites for retrieval quality.
  • Log system actions and model selections to ensure auditability for clinical staff.
  • Collaborate with researchers and clinical geneticists to define data models and system behavior.
  • Contribute to scientific manuscripts, conference abstracts, and posters as a co-author.
