Requirements
- CPA certification or equivalent rigor in technical accounting.
- Deep expertise in GAAP, specifically revenue recognition for marketplace or transactional businesses.
- Proven experience as a senior-most accounting owner (Controller, Assistant Controller, or Director of Accounting) at a venture-backed startup.
- Direct experience leading a migration from QuickBooks to a modern ERP.
- Documented success in converting company books from cash-basis to full accrual accounting.
- Experience preparing a company for its first financial statement audit.
- Comfort working with data pipelines and designing automated accounting processes.
- Hands-on operator capable of both strategic design and detailed reconciliation work.
- Experience managing complexity such as multi-location, multi-jurisdiction, or payments-heavy business models.
- Willingness to travel ~6 weeks per year for offsites and operational support.
Responsibilities
- Own the monthly close, revenue recognition, reconciliations, AP/AR, and payroll coordination.
- Convert systems to true accrual accounting by designing GAAP-compliant revenue recognition for transactional business.
- Lead the migration from QuickBooks to a modern ERP, including selection, implementation, and data integration.
- Rationalize the chart of accounts to ensure clean reporting across locations and business teams.
- Integrate accounting systems with operational data infrastructure to create a single source of truth.
- Manage indirect tax compliance, including sales/use tax and regulatory fees across multiple jurisdictions.
- Establish financial controls and documentation to prepare the company for its first financial statement audit.
- Manage, mentor, and develop in-house accounting staff.
- Partner with Operations, Sales, and Product teams to ensure revenue accuracy.
