Have 8+ years of professional backend development experience in production environments.
Have recent experience leading a backend team.
Have proven experience owning backend architecture for a mobile-first, consumer-facing app.
Bring strong hands-on expertise in an object-oriented language such as Ruby, Java, PHP, Python, or C#.
Be willing to work with Ruby on Rails.
Have experience building and scaling high-traffic systems with over 10,000 daily active users.
Understand distributed systems, relational databases, caching, and performance optimization.
Have practical cloud experience, preferably AWS.
Have experience collaborating with DevOps or infrastructure engineers.
Be able to explain technical topics and trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.
Have experience in a startup or fast-moving product company and be comfortable with changing priorities.
Be comfortable taking ownership and leading in a fully remote, distributed team environment.

Lead and mentor a team of 4–5 mid/senior backend engineers, including 1:1s, feedback, and performance management.
Translate product and business goals into technical roadmaps, sprint plans, and backend priorities.
Own backend architecture and technical vision for mobile-first, consumer-facing apps.
Oversee implementation of mobile app features with iOS/Android, Product, Data, DevOps, and Trust & Safety teams.
Make architectural decisions about scalability, performance, reliability, data flows, and AWS infrastructure.
Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, improve API speed and reliability, and design caching and database strategies.
Improve engineering processes, coding standards, code reviews, and deployment/CI pipelines.
Create and maintain technical documentation and design specifications for backend systems and initiatives.
Prioritize work and manage trade-offs as quarterly priorities change.
Code, review complex or high-impact work, and respond to critical production incidents.
