What would you actually manage?
Ecommerce virtual assistant work can cover product records, customer and order support, or broader store operations. The title does not define a standard scope. Read the duties for both the work involved and the decisions you would be expected to make.
Two recruitment descriptions inspected on September 16, 2026 illustrate the difference. They are examples, not a representative sample of the market or a promise that an assignment is available.
- Catalog and storefront work: FromWhere’s Shopify Virtual Assistant description emphasizes identifying products from interior images, setting up and maintaining storefronts, and keeping descriptions, images, prices, SKUs and stock levels accurate. A SKU is a product identifier used to distinguish an item or variant. The role also includes product-listing SEO, meaning work on search visibility. The page is labeled Cebu, Philippines, but does not explicitly establish remote work, nationwide eligibility, schedule or pay.
- Broader store operations: Wing’s E-Commerce Specialist description combines website operations and product listings with customer inquiries, pricing, inventory and supplier coordination, partnerships and promotions. Inventory work concerns stock records and availability; PPC means paid advertising charged per click. Wing also names PPC and social-media initiatives. Its page is marked Manila, Remote and PH Active Pooling, and explicitly calls the description generic. Actual tasks and tools are to be discussed at the final interview.
The distinction is not simply whether you know Shopify. Entering an approved price is different from choosing a discount. Recording a stock update is different from deciding what to tell a customer when the stock records disagree. Familiarity with the platform does not establish readiness for every responsibility around it.
For each duty, ask: “Would I carry out an approved change, decide what changes, or flag it for someone else?” Neither example settles the employer’s approval policy. That boundary matters especially for prices, stock adjustments, campaigns and customer exceptions.
Match duties to work you can demonstrate
Start with tasks you have actually done, rather than trying to make every line of the vacancy sound familiar. These are useful ways to explain relevant experience:
| Duty in the vacancy | Evidence you can describe truthfully |
|---|---|
| Accurate product records | A time you checked descriptions, product variants or stock data against an approved source, caught a mismatch and documented the correction. |
| Customer or order support | A case you handled, what information you checked, what you were authorized to resolve and when you escalated it. |
| Wider operations | Supplier coordination, reporting or campaign responsibilities you actually held, including what you owned and what needed approval. |
For example, if your experience is answering delivery questions, explain that work clearly. It may support an order-support application; it does not by itself demonstrate inventory planning or paid-ad management. If you maintained a spreadsheet but never updated a storefront, name that boundary too.
Are these no-experience examples? No. In the descriptions inspected on September 16, 2026, Wing asks for at least one year of relevant experience, alongside platform knowledge including Shopify, Amazon and eBay, content and inventory experience, SEO, English communication and Excel skills. Its “Entry Level” tier refers to one to three years, not no experience. FromWhere requests prior ecommerce or web-content experience, image-editing proficiency and writing skills; spreadsheet experience is preferred. A VA title, course or practice store does not waive those requirements.
Optional preparation exercise: Make a small fictional product sheet and review it for inconsistent identifiers, descriptions, prices and stock entries. Flag anything you cannot resolve from the supplied information, then write a short change note explaining what you would correct and what needs approval. This is editorial preparation advice, not either employer’s required test or a substitute for commercial experience. Label it as fictional if you share it.
Keep customer details, order records, credentials and former-client material out of public samples. Use invented data for practice. Do not change a live store or spend advertising money to prove that you can do the work.
Can you do it from the Philippines?
Separate four details: where the employer hires, where the store’s customers are, where you must work and when you must be available. A store serving US customers does not automatically require US residence. It also does not mean applicants from every country are eligible.
Wing’s inspected description supports a Philippines-based remote example and specifies US work hours and 20–40 hours weekly. That weekly total does not tell you your Philippine shift. Ask for the working days, start and end times, a named time zone, training hours and how US daylight-saving changes affect your schedule.
FromWhere’s Cebu label is a reason to ask, not an invitation to assume: “Is this remote, and can I work from my location?” The words “virtual assistant” alone do not establish a nationwide remote arrangement. Neither Philippines example establishes eligibility elsewhere.
Then check what being available means for the actual work:
- Are there customer-response deadlines, weekend shifts or extra coverage during promotional peaks?
- Can catalog work be completed within a deadline, or must you remain online throughout a fixed shift?
- What device, headset, webcam and main or backup internet connection does this assignment require?
These are questions to resolve, not conditions established for both employers. Wing lists equipment and connectivity requirements, but its specifications are not universal minimums for ecommerce VA work.
Clarify the assignment, workload and pay
“Manage the store” is too broad to estimate a working day. Ask how many stores and sales channels you would support, which recurring tasks come first, what volumes or deadlines are expected and who handles exceptions. Product count, customer-contact volume and number of stores measure different demands. A catalog update deadline does not tell you how much time remains for an incoming support queue.
Placement is another separate question. Wing’s active-pooling label does not establish an immediately available client assignment, and its generic description leaves the final scope open. Ask whether you are being considered for a named assignment or future placement, and when you will receive the exact responsibilities. “Start immediately” language is not a confirmed placement date.
Do not treat the hiring process as one continuous block of paid work. Establish the terms at each step:
- Assessment: Before substantial work, ask what you must deliver, how long it is expected to take and whether it is compensated.
- Training: If paid training is advertised, confirm the rate, payment conditions and timing. Wing advertises paid training, but the inspected page does not settle those details for an individual candidate.
- Client assignment and paid work: Ask when an assignment is expected to begin and exactly when paid work starts. Passing an assessment or starting training is not the same as a confirmed assignment.
- First payment: Confirm the payment method, the work period it covers and the expected payment date.
Get the actual offer’s currency, pay period, guaranteed hours if any, part-time or full-time package, any fees or deductions, benefits, worker arrangement and treatment of additional hours in writing. Wing’s page displays PHP experience-tier packages and a USD monthly range. Those mixed figures do not establish your offer or an ecommerce VA market rate. Its advertised HMO benefit also does not settle your legal employment status.
Before accepting, resolve who provides work accounts and tools, who approves price, stock and campaign changes, and how you should report errors. At the start, compare the assigned duties and schedule with the agreement and reconfirm the first-payment arrangements. If a catalog role now includes running paid campaigns, clarify the changed scope before taking that responsibility.
When an ecommerce offer is something else
Coordinating fulfillment inside a store’s business process is different from receiving packages at your home, repackaging them and shipping them onward for a supposed employer. The latter is a scam pattern described in the US Federal Trade Commission’s job-scam guidance, inspected September 16, 2026.
Do not pay for a promised job or deposit a purported employer’s check and forward money. Independently verify the organization and its application channel before sending sensitive documents or granting access to accounts. If you have already sent money, contact the payment provider promptly to ask whether the transaction can be reversed; recovery is not guaranteed.
Neither recruitment example establishes buying stock, personally funding advertising or purchasing a VA course as a prerequisite. A course or business opportunity is not itself an employment offer. Missing details need clarification, but an incomplete description alone does not prove fraud.
Choose the next role to inspect
Use the duties to make a decision: proceed when the required work, experience and location fit; clarify material unknowns before a lengthy assessment; pass when a stated requirement is incompatible with what you can offer or the hours you can work.
Start with Remoote’s Ecommerce search for a role-specific search entry point. The September 16, 2026 inspection confirmed the search page, but did not establish returned ecommerce vacancies. Open whatever results are available and check the duties and country restrictions rather than relying on the category name.
For assistant-titled work, Remoote’s broader Virtual Assistant results display responsibilities and location information and offer daily matching-job email alerts. This is not an ecommerce-only or Philippines-only shortlist. Broader VA alerts can include unrelated work, and they do not verify employers or your eligibility.
For the next result you open, identify its main responsibility: catalog maintenance, customer and order support, or broader operational ownership. Then check the required platform experience and coverage hours. If those fit, identify one truthful example of your work that supports the application; if a crucial detail is missing, make that your first question.
