Requirements:
  • Strong interest in algorithmic justice, demonstrated by past work, research, volunteer organizing, or other projects
  • Backgrounds in technical fields (e.g., engineering, machine learning, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, statistics) and applicants with backgrounds in sociotechnical fields (e.g., history of science, history of technology, human-computer interaction, information science, science and technology studies, sociology)
  • Excellent research, writing, and communication skills and a desire to work in an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently as well as in a team.
  • Proficiency in a programming language for statistical analysis, such as R or Python, is preferred but not required.
  • Familiarity with software development, developing cloud (AWS, GCP, Azure) based tooling and open-source libraries related to generative AI.
Responsibilities:
  • Conduct sociotechnical analyses of generative AI systems in line with ACLU values and potential use cases.
  • Conducting a landscape analysis of current generative AI offerings and possible implementations, evaluating various options given potential ACLU use cases
  • Adapting cutting edge research on bias testing of large language models (LLMs) to develop a model-agnostic testing and evaluation toolkit
  • Support the ACLU’s Generative AI Working Group with subject matter expertise on applied questions related to the privacy, security, fairness, accuracy, and transparency of generative AI systems
  • Participate in the ACLU’s Generative AI Reading Group alongside technologists, attorneys, and policy experts from the ACLU’s National office and Affiliates
  • Assist with the drafting, production and distribution of public facing materials such as blogs or presentations about generative AI
  • Leading or participating in other data science projects with members of the legal analytics team
